talk about scrapping 15 year old cars was recently raised as a means to rejuvenate the local automobile market.

i think this is a good way to keep old and unfit vehicles off the roads. yes, this will mainly affect the lower income group, but there are ways to address this particular segment. another thing to complete the picture is to have vehicles needing to pass a mandatory fitness / road worthiness test to be allowed on the road if older than 15 years old.

No decision made to scrap old cars

THE Government has not made a decision on a proposal to scrap cars that are more than 15 years old.

Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Ng Lip Yong said what was reported in the newspapers was only a suggestion.

He said no decision was made at a meeting held at the Transport Ministry on March 16 to discuss the proposal by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Car Dealers and Credit Companies Association.

“Actually, the National Automotive Policy comes under the purview of a committee headed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The policy is designed to turn Malaysia into a regional or a global automotive hub.

“At the moment, the policy has not been fully implemented,” he said when replying to a supplementary question from Datuk Moktar Radin (BN – Kinabatangan) during question time.

Moktar asked the ministry not to entertain the association’s proposal as the people could ill-afford to condemn their 15-year-old cars.

The proposal received negative reaction from the people, including from the Federation of the Malaysian Consumer Associations (Fomca).
