Anybody who has not seen Firefly the TV series, I recommend that they get the DVD set and watch the whole season one. Sadly, Firefly was axed by Fox after the first season. However, since the axing - the series gained serious following amongst sci-fi afficionados.

The series is notable for using the wild west theme and approach to space exploration. The series is set some 400 years in the future and mankind has started to colonise space. Like the colonials during the sea-faring era, governance and administration in some remote parts of the universe are almost non-existant, allowing bandits and pirates to operate freely.

The main characters are space pirates. Often doing 'jobs' for a bounty. The hero is a Han Solo type character: purely self interested and mercenary. His band of merry bandits are a bunch of interesting characters. The series is very character driven which makes it great watching. With a bit of Government conspiracy thrown in, Firefly is an 'un-put-downable' watch.
